Alirocumab can be administered with or without statins. For instance, patients who do not tolerate statins would be good candidates for plain alirocumab treatment.
How much LDL cholesterol reduction can be achieved with alirocumab treatment?
Many studies have been done to look at the effects of alirocumab on LDL cholesterol. On average LDL cholesterol could be lowered by almost 50% (FH1 and FH II studies).
This reduction is a great effect of the above treatment and could be significant in patients with high cholesterol who would need significant LDL cholesterol reduction.
Alirocumab has generally been well-tolerated, but we need to be cautious because no long-term data and research about the effects of this medication to the body is available.
Therefore, we need to be watchful when prescribing or taking the above medication and keep our eyes open for possible yet unrecognized adverse effects.
