Alirocumab (Praluent) reduces blood cholesterol level. Cholesterol is a fatty substance that are found mostly in animal products. Low density lipoprotein cholesterol or LDL-cholesterol is the most important factor contributing to the hardening of vessels, heart attack and stroke.
Let me explain how alirocumab works.
1) Alirocumab is a proprotein convertase subtilisin kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitor or blocker. Therefore this medication blocks the above enzyme’s (PCSK9) function.
2) PCSK9 is an enzyme found in the liver and intestine, its main function is to reduce the number of LDL receptors by degrading them in the liver. You should know that more LDL receptors are better than fewer receptors. LDL receptors are important in reducing blood cholesterol levels by helping remove cholesterol from the blood.
3) Alirocumab blocks and inhibits the PCSK9 function followed by increasing the number of LDL receptors, and, it will consequently reduce the blood cholesterol level.
